Label Text"Salome" is shown here shortly after the event which made her famous, her request for the head of John the Baptist (Mark 6: 17-28). The desired part of the unfortunate saint lies at her feet, carved in relief into the base of the sculpture. Being the temptress/dancer that she was, "Salome" is nude except for a piece of drapery over her right arm. She kneels with her left leg extended and behind her right leg. She bends back and to the right with her head down and resting on her left shoulder. Her almond-shaped eyes are closed. This piece was evidently first conceived in black marble (private collection, Boston). By the sculptor's own telling, only two bronze casts were made; the other is in the Museum of Art, Seattle, Washington. These were cast in 1927 at the foundry of Gianini et Fils in Paris using the lost wax method. Lovet-Lorski is known to have carved at least one version of Salome's head alone, which he called Peace.
