Label TextAccording to M. Curcin, one of Mestrovic's biographers, the sculptor created his first self-portrait in 1901 when he was in Vienna. This was followed by two others modeled in Rome in 1912 and 1914 respectively; one done in London in 1915; and another executed in Cannes in 1917. The image of 1912 is probably the best known of these and was exhibited in America at Mestrovic's solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1924 (cat. no. 54). The Mestrovic Gallery in Split owns two other self-portraits, both in bronze and dated 1932 and 1941 respectively.
The Academy's self-portrait, though undated, appears to be a late work, judging by the age of the artist as portrayed here; it was probably executed in the early 1950s. Stylistically, it is impressionistic and rather non-academic.
