Label TextSwain Gifford, as the artist was known, garnered recognition for his paintings and prints of stormy coastal regions. The small scale and broad treatment reflect the artist's longstanding admiration for the intimacy and freshness of the artists of the French Barbizon School whose works he had seen while traveling abroad during the 1870s. As one contemporary noted, "Mr. Gifford will paint a barren moor under a leaden sky so that it shall almost palpitate with emotion."
