Virginia Benedict (1844-1849) was the daughter of James Milton Benedict and Mary Augusta Mead. The short life of Virginia Benedict, the bucolic setting, the allegorical implications of the vine-covered pilaster and the lamb, all suggest that the portrait was executed posthumously. As with the portrait of Blanch Benedict, the attribution of this portrait remains problematic and is discussed in the previous entry.
