Label TextNickerson worked principally as a stone carver over the course of her long career, but also utilized other materials. She studied at the School of the National Academy in the late 1920s, where she received instruction in stone carving from Ahron Ben-Shmuel. Escape features the sleeping face of a person of indeterminate gender carved into a rough block of Tuckahoe marble. The concept behind the piece revolved around the idea of a face being imprisoned in marble until its liberation by the sculptor’s hammer, steel points and chisel.[c. 1855]
