Label TextSpicer-Simson evidently modeled a relief portrait of himself as early as 1907. The Academy's piece, however, is an example of a later and different conception. Typical of a relief portrait, it shows the artist in profile, facing to the viewer's left. It entered the collection as a gift of the artist in 1951, that is, at the time of his election to the Associate category, not as his diploma portrait but prompted by his gratitude for having been elected to membership in the Academy. (His ANA diploma portrait is a lithograph which was accepted on APril 2, 1951). A replica of this relief, also in bronze, is in the collection of the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida.
