Label TextBorn in London, England, Mary Frank came to the U.S. at age seven. She studied with Max Beckmann and Hans Hofmann and her first works were wood carvings created in the early 1950s. Even though she emerged at a time when abstraction was dominant, the figure has always been a subject for the artist. "Untitled" comes from a series of monoprints Frank was making in the 1980s and, like many of her works, contains ethereal figures of unspecified gender that swirl in what appears to be an underwater environment. Her work is influenced by both Eastern and Western thinking.
