Label TextFrederick Spencer was elected an Associate in 1837, before the Academy instituted its requirement that a portrait be presented to confirm election. However, he and Elliott seem to have executed each other's portraits in late 1844 or early 1845. Elliott's likeness of him was shown in the 1845 Academy annual, as property of the National Academy; this indicates that it had been conveyed to the organization within the year, probably by Spencer and probably in response to the Academy's desire to have a collection of portraits of its members. Elliott lent Spencer's Portrait of an Artist to the same 1845 exhibition, which opened shortly before the annual meeting at which Elliott was elected an Associate. Presumably that portrait was of Elliott and is the painting that, fairly promptly, became his ANA diploma presentation.
