Label TextIn 1874, Richards spent his first summer in Newport, Rhode Island, and by the end of his sojourn he was considering making the city his permanent summer residence. Richards was captivated by the area, and discovered it to be a “mine of wonderful beauty.” The artist created numerous watercolors of the area’s pictorial landmarks, including Easton’s Point and Paradise Valley, and became enamored with nearby Conanicut Island across from Newport, whose rugged headlands and coves would provide him with a seemingly inexhaustible source of subjects for decades to come. The shoreline of Newport, Conanicut and Narragansett Bay became the subject of numerous watercolors, which are remarkable for their sensitive and poetic handling of light and atmosphere.
