Label TextThe scenery of New York's Genesee Valley provided Colman with subject matter for a long series of sketches and finished oil paintings. The present work appeared in the 1865 Academy annual exhibition, and Colman showed two other Genesee scenes in annuals of 1866 and 1880. In addition, his auction sales of 1864, 1872, and 1893 each contained several Genesee studies. "The Genesee Valley, New York" was likely painted soon after Colman returned from a two-year sojurn in Europe, when his work was growing increasingly delicate and atmospheric under the influence of George Inness.
