Label TextThis painting of an elderly carpenter by the illustrator, genre and portrait painter Benjamin West Clinedinst was created in the late 19th-century at the height of the industrial revolution, and offers a nostalgic look back at a simpler, bygone era. The darkened woodshed contains elements of the carpenter's existence; the lathe, half-finished pieces of wood, shavings, flay barrel hoops and ax handles offer evidence of his traditionally humble trade. Clinedinst portrays a man who is devoted to his work, though caught at a moment of leisure reading the daily newspaper in order to keep himself abreast of contemporary events outside his rural purview.
