In the foreword Arms wrote, "We have gathered these our Italian memories like a loose bunch of flowers culled at random, each for some quailty of color or of fragrance all its own; among them are the hothouse blooms of great and beautiful cities, the sweet cottage blossoms of quaint, small towns, and the common poppies and gay meadow flowers of the peasant fields."
