Label TextA letter of February 29 [1895] from Howe to the Academy reads: "Have written Chase to send my portrait at once to the Academy to be passed upon. Although not quite done, he will finish same afterwards if necessary." Two weeks later the Council accepted the portrait.
A testament to the friendship of the two artists was in the posthumous sale of the contents of Chase's studio in 1917: a panel painting by Howe, In the Lowlands, Holland, inscribed, To my friend W. M. Chase.
