Label TextIn 1904, Gilbert was commissioned to design the Finney Memorial Chapel at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. The building, which was completed in 1908 and remains in use as a gathering place for religious and secular services, was commissioned by Frederick Norton Finney, a successful western railroad magnate, to honor his father Charles Grandison Finney, former president of the college. Gilbert was a devoted watercolorist. He considered it one of his primary recreations. When traveling he would regularly take along brushes and watercolors. The watercolors executed on these excursions were notable for their delineation of light, shadow, color and texture.
