Label TextHungarian-born Gabor Peterdi studied in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s before learning burin engraving in Paris at Atelier 17, the experimental printmaking workshop of British artist Stanley William Hayter. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1939 and served in the Armed Forces during World War II. Peterdi was a prolific printmaker following the war and his 1959 book Printmaking: Methods Old and New is still a standard text for students. Disturbing memories of the war were evident in his work and here Peterdi depicts himself with a melancholic or brooding expression and casts his face against a dark background.
