Label TextPrincipally a landscape and still life painter, Jane Freilicher studied with Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann in the late 1940s. Like several other Hofmann students, Freilicher rejected abstraction in favor of a representational style and became friendly with a number of like-minded painters and poets including Leland Bell, Louisa Matthiasdottir, Robert De Niro, Sr., Kenneth Koch, John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, and others. The artist often combines her interest in interior and exterior scenes as in "Self-Portrait in a Mirror." Painted in the artist's studio in Water Mill, New York, the work juxtaposes Freilicher's reflection in a mirror against the expansive and lush landscape of Long Island.
