Label TextAs in many of his works, Koppelman was influenced by the philosophy of Aesthetic Realism when creating this double self-portrait. In the artist's words, it is "about the outer self and inner self, who confront each other across a bar of light asking, 'Who are you?'" For the figure on the left, he used a photograph in the photoetching process; the other figure and the dark shadowy areas result from traditional etching and aquatint. The bar of light comes from that part of the plate receiving no ink at the time of printing.
