Label TextIn 1910, Winkler left his native Vienna in his sixteenth year and came to the United States. He traveled alone to San Francisco, where he became well known for his etchings of that city's Chinatown, Telegraph Hill neighborhood, and wharves. Early in his career, he often worked on site directly on his etching plate. His prints consequently have a feeling of spontaneity and immediacy and also capture many details. This example probably dates betweeen late 1916 and early 1918 when Winkler focused on San Francisco's Chinese shopkeepers and their goods.
