Label TextNew Jersey-native Lois Dodd studied at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. She, along with Charles Cajori, Angelo Ippolito, Fred Mitchell, and William King (pictured here) was a founder of the Tanager Gallery, an early cooperative gallery in New York. Known primarily as a landscape painter, in the last twenty years or so the human figure has played more than a supporting role in the artist's oeuvre. This is a portrait of Dodd's former husband who was also a past president of the National Academy the sculptor, Bill King. She has depicted him intimately with a downward cast gaze and a contemplative expression.
