Label TextThe San Francisco Bay Area was an active center of abstract painting during the 1940s and 1950s, but shortly thereafter it also witnessed a resurgence of figuration of which Elmer Bischoff was a leading figure. His Seated Model and J.H. depicts one of the regular life drawing sessions held in the San Francisco studio of painter Julius Hatofsky (1922-2006). The influence of Bischoff's earlier abstraction on his figurative work is seen in the drawing's informal geometry, strong contours, and deep contrast between areas of light and dark.
