Label TextMoving to New York from Chicago in 1947 after studying at the School of the Art Institute, Lester Johnson initially fell under the spell of Abstract Expressionism and used its gestural methods of painting to create large figure compositions. Throughout the 1960s his work was almost exclusively in black and white with heavy outlines and little or no modeling typified his figures. By the 1970s color had entered the artist's palette which became more saturated over time. "Three Women and Arches #3" shows Johnson's interest in a type of monumental sculptural female figure that is characteristic of the artist's work from this period.
