Label TextBy 1962 this portrait had disintegrated virtually beyond repair. Boyle's face was largely reconstructed by Eliot Clark who recorded that only the forehead and right eye of the original portrait remained. Throughout his career Page constantly experimented with glazes and scumbling and many of the techniques he employed proved unstable. Consequently, the condition of this work, is not atypical of his oevure. Although there is no record of Boyle submitting this portrait in the Academy's minutes, it was published as being in the Academy's possessions by 1852 (Academy consitution, 1852, 31).
