Whether I consciously will it or not, whether I am painting a race track, a West Indian bar room, a carnival, or a beach, a certain nostalgic sadness usually manages to creep into the finished work. There is always a hint, it seems to me, of those people who in the past have enjoyed a day at the races, or stood before my subject did at a lonely tropic bar waiting for something to happen, or in bygone spings came out in a restless mood to attend their local carnival, or walked a windswept beach at dawn.
