Label TextBorn and raised in rural Georgia, artist and activist Benny Andrews studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and moved to New York in the late 1950s. He was a vocal advocate for African American artists and with other artists founded The Black Emergency Cultural Coalition in 1969 to help advance this cause. Despite emerging at a time when abstraction was the dominant mode, Andrews' work was always figurative and often represented the struggles of African Americans. While he was a skilled painter, Collagist shows Andrews working in the medium for which he was best known.
