Label TextImmigrating to the United States with his family in 1911, Luigi Lucioni grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey and studied nights at the Cooper Union while working days for an engraving house. He continued his studies at the National Academy of Design and at the Art Students League. Greatly influenced by Italian primitive painting of the Renaissance, Lucioni developed an extremely precise and highly-realistic style.Lucioni worked as both a painter and a printmaker whose subjects included landscapes, still-lifes, and portraits. His mature style led to his immense popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, and he was often considered one of the best known artists of his generation. "Portrait of William Whitehead" is a typical work by the artist showing the sitter before a solid background and delineated with great precision.
