Label TextLike all of the early members of the National Academy of Design, James Whitehorne was not required to submit a diploma portrait when he was elected an associate in 1829. Whitehorne and his colleagues were, nonetheless, encouraged to provide their portraits after new by-laws were adopted in 1838. According to a note made by Eliot Clark this portrait was dated 1844 on its reverse. This date is compatible with age of Whitehorne in his portrait.
