Label TextAlthough Weir met Hassam in New York in the 1890s, twenty years after he first encountered Albert P. Ryder, the three men became an intimate group of friends in middle age. Hassam and Ryder were elected as Academy Associates in 1902, surprisingly late in their careers, and Weir painted both friends' portraits in a similar style. Hassam and Weir saw each other often in the country, and it is possible that the present portrait, like Ryder's (1395-P), was begun at Branchville. A champion of Weir's work (he owned the artist's Pheasants, 1889), Hassam served on the committee for Weir's 1924 memorial exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and wrote "Reminiscences of Weir" for the volume, Julian Alden Weir, An Appreciation of his Life and Works. Both were also members of The Ten American Painters.
