Label TextA note in the Academy Minutes indicates that Ward exchanged this portrait in 1901 for his original diploma Self-Portrait, accepted in 1876. Registration records, however, failed to note the change, and until recently, the present painting was thought to carry a date of c. 1875. The 1901 Minutes entry makes no mention of the authorship of the portrait. Since this later unsigned painting was never entered into the registration records, there is no way of knowing for sure whether it, like its predecessor, is a Self-Portrait or by another hand.
