Label TextCarrere was born in Brazil in 1858. He enrolled at the Ecôle des Beaux Arts in 1877 and completed his architectural studies in 1882. Following his return to America he joined the architectural firm of McKim Mead & White. There he met Thomas Hastings who was to become his partner in 1885. Their first project was the Ponce de Leon Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida. Carrere was the organizer of the Society of Beaux Arts Architects, and promoted city planning. Carrere & Hastings' most successful projects centered on churches, civic buildings, theatres and memorial architecture. Their best known building is the New York Public Library (in which they followed the precedents of the Bibliotheque Sainte Genevieve in Paris and McKim, Mead & White's Boston Public Library). Carrere's drawing dates from a year before his tragic death in a car accident.
