Label TextThe artist, in responding to Janet Rosenthal's inquiries, said of this painting: "The area around Haverstraw is very close to me. I've lived near the river all my life. It's always magic to go down there, by the river, particularly during the winter or the fall, when the Hudson is buried in snow. At Haverstraw [New York] there is something special in the light and the way it lies out in the middle of the river . . . . I like to work on a painting until the subject has been annihilated, until only the substantial parts are left. I don't want to be too dependent on the actual objects in it."
