Label TextThis thinly painted portrait shows less of a debt to Butler's teacher Couture, than to the latter's prominent American pupil, William Morris Hunt, whom Butler revered. Butler concentrates on reproducing his model's features accurately, particularly the eyes, paying little attention to dress. "We are too often painfully reminded of the tailor in contemporary portraits," he wrote in his 1900 article. Miller and Butler apparently had other connections than this portrait, for Miller is listed as the owner of Butler's Portrait of a Lady when it was exhibited in the Academy annual of 1875.
