Label TextBrown emigrated from England to America in 1853, and attended antique and life classes at the National Academy in the late 1850s. In 1861 he took over George Boughton's rooms at the famous Tenth Street Studio Building. Before Boughton left for Europe that year, Brown observed him working on a genre painting of boys, and the experience appears to have led him to try his own hand at painting scenes of child life. Early in his career as a genre painter he especially concentrated on depicting children in rural settings.
