Label TextThis work was accepted by the National Academy as Flume in Winter, but by 1925 it was called Flume in Snow. It is part of a series of at least eight paintings of Bradbury's Mill Dam in Old Lyme that Rook executed between the years 1905 and 1917.Diane Pietrucha Fischer determined three different styles in the series, and the first two are important in relation to this work. The early "Pennsylvania style," c. 1905, consists of winter scenes, in sober greys and browns rendered in thick broad strokes, while the works in the 'Old Lyme' style, c. 1908-1912, were executed during spring and summer. displaying the verdant greens and blues of those seasons.
Flume in Snow shares characteristics of both styles. Although a snow scene, green tonalities predominate in the foliage and trunks of the trees and the mill building. The work is perhaps a transitional one in Rook's ongoing series. Although it retains the winter setting, the green tonality moves towards his more vibrant "Old Lyme" style.
