Label TextRobinson and Kenyon Cox were together in Venice in 1878 and possibly early 1879. They also spent the spring of 1879 in Grez-sur-Loing. Robinson's small study (he used the term "pochade") was likely given to Cox at that time. The seated figure appears to be sketching and may represent Cox. A series of affectionate letters from Robinson to Cox documents their friendship into the mid-1880s. In later years, however, Cox and Robinson occasionally clashed while serving on juries of the Society of American Artists. The more conservative Cox opposed the acceptance of impressionistic work.
