Label TextMeiere was a prominent muralist and mosaicist. Her self-portrait tells us much about herself and her practice. Holding a well-worn palette and brushes, and dressed in a traditional painter’s smock, with hair pulled back, she conveys her professional seriousness as a working artist, while adding two feminine details: earrings and a peek of her embroidered blouse underneath. The most interesting detail in the painting is the ladder at left. It reveals exactly how this successful muralist worked: very physically, up on a ladder. Behind the ladder is a detail of a large wall mural which indicates the ambitious scale of the work she is undertaking.Collections
