Label TextLaura Shechter focuses primarily on still lifes, painting tabletops and mantelpieces on which are arranged decorative objects of domestic life, such as tablecloths, teapots, glassware, ceramic and pottery pieces, empty vases and flowered tablecloths and wallpaper. She works on themes such as The Shelf, The Cloth, The Semi Interior and the Interior, which relate to her teacher Ad Reinhardt's theories. She is concerned with decoration and the special cultural meaning carried by certain objects. Shechter paints her tabletop arrangements in shallow space and on narrow horizontal supports which gives them a strong sense of organization and an air of order. She explains that she "tries to bring order to [a scene]; ordinary vision is chaotic."
