Label TextThe Gypsy was painted following Shirlaw's return to the United States in 1877 after seven years of study at the Royal Academy in Munich. Its dark tones, localized color, and dramatic studio lighting are hallmarks of the style practiced in Munich by his American colleagues there, Frank Duveneck and William Merritt Chase. Shirlaw appears to allude to the gypsy's ostracism and inaccessibility by framing the figure in a dark doorway, beyond which the viewer's gaze cannot penetrate.
