Label TextArt historian David B. Lawall has suggested that this landscape could as easily be a studio composition as a direct study from nature. He also notes that this vignette was incorporated in Durand's painting "Landscape, the Rescue" (1846) (unlocated), and therefore dates the Academy's painting to about 1845. The circumstances of the work's acquisition by the Academy are unrecorded. It is first recorded in the collection inventory published in 1911.Collections
