Label TextThis painting, which may depict an allegory of spring, was offered by the artist for sale for $1,200 at the Academy's annual exhibition of 1889. A reviewer for the (New York) Evening Post saw it as 'strictly classical' and noted that it was executed with a 'powerful and somewhat acid color scheme.' The Art Amateur found it 'heavy'.Purple and Gold remained unsold and Low eventually presented it to the Academy as his diploma work. But he expressed a desire to exchange it for another work in the near future, an action which was never taken.
