Label TextReading the News is one of Mayr's few extant genre paintings, an interest that dominated the last years of his life. The composition of this work centers around a well-to-do, middle-aged man, engrossed in his newspaper. His seated posture is curiously echoed by the forelegs of the dog at lower right. Inside the shop a young shoemaker makes a gesture of derision or in simulation of drinking.Collections
