Label TextAuerbach-Levy was a painter but came to be more widely known as a printmaker and caricaturist. In this portrait of a man identified only as Mr. Charles, he achieved the spontaneous quality of a pencil or charcoal sketch through the use of the soft-ground etching technique. Evidently the artist was pleased with the results, for he cut out the figure from a large sheet, put his signature on it, and gave it to the Academy. He taught etching at the National Academy School from 1920 to 1935.
