Label TextMorse donated Leslie's portrait of Allston to the National Academy of Design in 1865. The painting marks a double commemoration: it recalls the professional and personal intimacy of artist, subject, and donor when the three were in London together from 1811 to 1815; and it memorializes their expanded artistic roles a decade later. By the mid-1820s, Allston was unquestionably the most renowned artist in America. Simultaneously, Leslie had risen to eminence in the British art world, becoming a Royal Academician in 1825. That same year, Morse was the guiding force in the founding of the New York Drawing Association, which in January 1826 was reconfigured as the National Academy of Design. Allston and Leslie were elected Honorary Members of the academy in 1827, while Morse served as president.
