Label TextThe short-lived artist Anthony Lewis De Rose was a prolific contributor to Academy annual exhibitions from 1829 through 1833, showing almost exclusively portraits, a number of which were designated "full length" in the exhibition catalogues. This portrait was lent for display in the sixth Academy annual exhibition by a Mr. Earle, who may be presumed to have been its subject's father. De Rose demonstrates his knowledge of the contemporary English conventions of formal portraiture by situating his subject in an imaginary outdoor setting and providing him with the enlivening attributes of the toy drum and attendant dog.
