Label TextThe head in profile at the center of this group of figure studies is almost identical to that of the figure at far left in MacEwen's The Judgement of Paris (c. 1886, Tennessee Wesleyan College, Athens, Tennessee). Also, the hands in the bowl at bottom right appear in the artist's The Ghost Story (1887, Cleveland Museum of Art), and the head of the old woman is identical to that of a figure in his Baby and Grandmother (c. 1895-1900, Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest). This work was probably once in the personal collection of the American artist Gari Melchers, who lived for many years in Holland. MacEwen frequently worked in that country and specialized in scenes of Dutch domestic life.Collections
