Label TextThe Academy acquired this landscape under the title Brook Scene. The subject, however, clearly pertains to the Hubbard painting James A. Suydam lent to the Academy's 1860 annual exhibition. The tiny figure in this landscape, a girl dressed in red, is very probably an allusion to Charles Perrault's character Little Red Riding Hood. Although a popular figure in many nineteenth-century genre paintings, she rarely appears in what would be more properly deemed landscape paintings.
