Label TextHowland's cheerful scene is typical of the artist: the framing trees attest to the influence of Camille Corot's airy brushwork; Corot and the Barbizon School are also evident in the meandering, serpentine path leading back to a pond or waterway. The inclusion of children at play and buildings in the distance "domesticates" the landscape and adds a degree of intimacy. Howland, who usually included figures in his outdoor views, was of a gregarious nature: wherever he went, he seems to have had no trouble attracting children to serve as models in his plein-air sessions.
