Label TextThe work of Kipniss, a painter and printmaker, often expresses a state between fantasy and reality. He usually depicts scenes at dawn or dusk when light and forms are ambiguous and have a mysterious and meditative quality. Kipniss experimented with etching and lithography in the 1960s but in the 1980s turned to mezzotint to achieve even richer darks and more subtle light effects, the latter requiring exceptional care in the working of the plate surface and the handling of the ink at the time of printing.
