Label TextAccording to the Academy's records this portrait was originally inscribed on the reverse, "Portrait of Samuel L. Waldo painted by William Jewett, 1848 Assoc, Artists for 35 years." When Waldo and Jewett were elected associate members of the Academy they proceeded to paint each other's diploma portraits. In comparison to the portrait painted by Waldo, Jewett's portrait surpisingly animate (?) suggesting that it was he who was responsible for expressiveness of the firm's portraits. This is confirmed by a letter in the Academy's files written by Samuel Waldo's son, Howard. In his letter he states that after Waldo completed the majority of portrait, "Mr. Jewett would have a sitting with subject to give the grand final touch to the expression,..."
