Label TextHamilton's friendship with Moran may have begun while this portrait-dated the year of Hamilton's move to New York-was being painted. Both men also spent time on eastern Long Island, where Moran and his wife encouraged artists to summer. Hamilton's likeness is a somewhat romanticized studio presentation. Dressed in a fur-trimmed cape and a prominent wide-brimmed hat, the subject appears ready to venture outdoors for a stroll. The raised brows call attention to the artist's direct gaze, and Hamilton has taken care to differentiate between the smooth, thickly painted forehead and cheeks and the fine, scraggly texture of the long beard.Collections
