Label TextThe Academy was apparently concerned because Hale's signature could not be located on his qualifying portrait. In his typically witty fashion, Hale wrote that this "rather pleased" him, for he held "that signatures shouldn't be blatantly apparent." He added, "it's there all the same or was when I sent it." Hale enclosed a small sketch of the portrait, in order to help the Academy staff locate the signature.
